What the Fuck is Religion

I admit the title itself is at best blasphemous and at worst a complete repudiation of what I am sure many of you hold dear. Also, I would like to ask my mother, should she haplessly wonder onto my blog again, to please don't rush and call me and tell me how disappointed you are that I started cursing in my blog again, but understand the significance of my title. Understand that my reckless mixture of sacrilegious and profane is an attempt to make you at first dig into your religious roots and ask two questions... The first is the obvious emotional knee-jerk response.... 'How could he'. Then, HOPEFULLY, the second question, after all of you have finished the order of 12 bottles of holy water to be sent to my house... ask this question... 'Why would he?'
A little background - I grew up in a Christian home, and was sent to church from a very early age. I can even remember at one point I wanted to be a pastor. So all throughout my life, I have been taught the Christian stories and never questioned why things were the way they were, I just accepted it and moved on. Then, the inevitable happened... I actually started to ask questions, because, as most faith based things go, much of the tenets of my 'religion' didn’t make much sense to me. Things were hopelessly contradictory, and many of my burning questions could not be answered. The concept of 'religion' started to make less and less sense to me. I often times wished that I was one of those people, who were saved, then found their way. However, I was never so lucky *insert confused face here* to be part of that group.
What stuck out to me is that people who all readily identified themselves as 'Christian', often were at ends with one another, which made little sense to me because aren’t we all Christians and those of other faiths false prophets? This doesn’t make much sense?
Please note that my beef was not with just Christianity, it was with every religion that considered their way to be the end all and be all. It was with the mindset that breeds ignorance, stubbornness and MANY times a complete disregard for what the purpose of religion, in my eyes at least, was supposed to serve. Many times, a complete obsession with religion led to maximal, narrow view, which often times led to disregard for the few things that are common within us. The inherent nature to be humane, and the inherent nature to be civil. Religion had gotten tied up in an adverse relationship with good human nature. The more religions some got, the more dismissive, and self-righteous they became, often times not in their actions, but in their thoughts, which to me is more dangerous. If you can’t understand where I am going with this, let me spell it out... - Religion is the Root of that which is Evil....
Or at least, the way religion is practiced today.
*pause and think about it*
Religion has become a way to set apart that which is not similar, and that which does not think the same. Religion... which in my mind serves to bring us together, is NOW used to sew seeds of division, which grow into a foliage of ideology that becomes more and more divisive with each day it is watered.... Remember though Matthew 7 v 1 - Judge not that ye be not judge. Similarly John 8 v 7 (yea... shite talking Mumford still know a lil bit of scripture)
Much like what I was saying in the paragraph above, Christianity for example, preaches that the only way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ. But I always pose this question... what about those who grew up all their lives living just and righteous lives, who live lives so remote that they have NEVER been introduced to this one 'true religion'. Last time I checked, the only way that Christianity is the worlds most widely accepted religion is if we include Quakers and Jehovah's Witnesses (and JW's are some annoying propaganda preaching nuts)
Do I have a better answer? Hell no, but that’s the joy of my blog, I type what I think and I speak my opinion.... so here it is... this is what I (I wish I could double cap the 'I' for emphasis or something) but this is what I believe.
I believe religion acts simply, but not underestimatedly (not a word, but you get it) as a guide in which we are to live our lives. I believe religion is cultural and prone to cultural variations. I believe religion is personal and is best when kept personal while abiding by the common human values. Therefore, I do not believe that there is a Supreme religion, I do however, believe that there is a Supreme way in which our lives are to be lived. I believe that this Supreme way of life, no matter where you are from or what you are convinced you practice has the same core principles and virtues... honesty, kindness, love and respect for one another and forgiveness. I furthermore believe that when religion becomes a tool, or an object with which one uses to determine who is less, more, or equally righteous thus, a complete departure from some of what I believe is the guiding principles of religion, we separate ourselves from these virtues.
Religion, as practiced today, is not sustainable.
In leaving I will say this - a pastor will give you his interpretation of religion, even though it might not be His interpretation.
