Hopping on the Soca Train

Hopping on the Soca Train

If you're from the rural, seaside parish of Mayaro in Trinidad, chances are 'soca artist' is a bit of a stretch in terms of a professional future.  But odds have been beaten before.

Cue Kemist (or, as his mother calls him, Neil Alexander), cousin to artists KMC and Orlando Octave, and budding soca artist.  The 30-year old has two tracks for this season, 'Next Year Carnival' (groovy) and 'Carnival Slave', produced by Shawn 'Da Ma$tamind' Noel and Alan Brizan, respectively.  Aiming for the International Soca Monarch competition, Alexander plans to reintroduce some old school flavour to the season, citing David Rudder and Superblue as his mentors.  We can only wish him luck.
